i decided to also ask the german man that is married to the balinese woman, how it is for him to be living here...he makes due....they tried living in germany for a few years, he as an engineer and she as a translator, and after a few years they realized that they only see each other on the weekend, and that is not how they want to live, busy working in order to pay all the expenses involved in living in a city. so since she was balinese they decided to move to bali, where there would be family, and also the possibility to live without having to work anymore, and to be able to enjoy their life together, and to start a family and to be active parents in raising their child together.
he had met known her as a child for 25 years before he married her, having come each year to visit his sister who is married to a balinese man, and he saw her growing up, and then when she returned from java, a Woman (!) they fell in love and she come to live in germany and 6 months later they married....nice, no?! so he is 50 and she is 35 and they have a little 5 year old daughter...and a big house and prize winning garden (she has a green thumb) and for 6 years already he hasn't worked and has enjoyed his life,, has a boat to go diving on the west coast, and a nanny for their daughter...but he now feels that he would like to do some work again...that he has lived the life that he thought he wanted, but sees that he still likes the stimulation from working and may try and lecture at a near by university in his profession...
for him, living here means, just his house and family and some expatriate friends...there is no culture here that interests him, no movies, lectures, plays, no interesting conversations with anyone, since he knows only a little indonesian and most people do not know enough english or german. he is tired of being approached by all the balinese, always with the intention of getting some of his money to buy something, or invest in something. he does not trust anyone. and he has seen how over the past 35 years the country has changed so much because of the west coming in and the capitalization of everything!
but they have many animals on their land and he enjoys his life at home no stress, no pressures, enough money, he can allow his wife to have a political career if she decides to and he will gladly raise their daughter and stay home.
